H. Miguel is a self-taught visual artist born in Toronto, Ontario, with roots in Nicaragua. His artistic journey began in 2021, emerging from a deeply personal place of depression. Initially drawn to painting as a means of emotional expression, Miguel discovered a powerful form of catharsis that evolved into a passionate exploration of the human experience. For him, art became a language beyond words, a research into mental health, self-discovery, and the complex emotional landscapes we navigate as individuals.
Miguel's debut solo exhibition, It’s Ok To Be Sad, Just Don’t Stay That Way. (2022), showcased 15 pieces created within the first 10 months of his practice, offering a raw, unfiltered perspective on his struggles and growth. Each work reflects his commitment to finding light in the darker moments of life and emphasizes the beauty of vulnerability.
Miguel’s art is a testament to the belief that life is about new experiences and the discovery of hidden talents. With each brushstroke, he continues to redefine his personal narrative while offering others a space to reflect on their own.
My work is a research into the ineffable—moments in time, emotional experiences, and states of mind that resist verbal expression. I am deeply fascinated by the ways in which we process and internalize experiences that are beyond language, seeking to translate them into something that is felt rather than explained. Through my large-scale paintings, I aim to create an immersive space where the viewer can feel as though they are swallowed by the work, invited to lose themselves within it.
The process itself is an ongoing dialogue between conscious intention and unconscious impulse. Driven by my experiences with ADHD, anxiety and mood swings, the work often evolves in unpredictable, fragmented ways. This fluidity allows my subconscious imagination to take the lead, resulting in spontaneous shifts in color, form, and texture. The final piece reflects both a deliberate exploration of emotional depth and the organic, chaotic influence of my mental landscape.
Ultimately, my art is a space for connection and reflection—a place where what cannot be spoken is given room to be seen, felt, and experienced.
